It would be funny to do a whole series of articles based on teaser titles and see if people actually read the entire article. Wonder if there is eye recognition software that can tell you how far a person reads till they discover " no easy answers here"?

Hi!

I'm a single mom, and I'm just getting started, and I'm reading through old newsletter topics that I feel pertain to me.

Apparently you hosted a workshop on making one's own prints over a year ago. I really need to know how to do this as funds are extremely limited (i.e. I can't afford to pay for them right now). By any chance, is there a blog entry, audio or video available from that workshop available for purchase?

Thanks for all you are doing to help me and others like me to use our talents and make money in a rewarding way. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks!

At a certain point you have to be able to look at your work and honestly evaluate it. Whether it is good or bad, if it needs some work in that spot or is ready to go. The best method to use is time and a fresh eye. Setting a painting aside and taking a new look later can show you obvious flaws that you couldn't see in the midst of painting or it can show you that the work you are agonizing over is actually not too shabby and could be considered complete. Of course, in the world of deadlines, that period away from the painting may be only the time it takes to get a cup of coffee or make a phone call.
You need to take ownership of your work. It is your work your collectors want.

I read the article and my first inclination was to support them for their creativity and commitment. But as I read on I started to think of all the ways they could spend their time and still be creative without causing so much chaos to their lives. Ah ha - I said to myself - I am officially old when I think they are hooligans just defacing property and causing torment to themselves and their families (the child looked worried). The final straw however, was the pathetic looking penis with no flash or flourish whatsoever. I read the whole article in anticipation of seeing this wonderful piece of art, in all its glory, and all I got was a stick figure. Their art is nothing but a feeble statement of rebellion - surely they could find something more stand up than that!

I think a good commission agreement upfront should include what to do if the person commissioning the artwork doesn't like it, wants to make changes, etc. There should always be an "out clause" -- how either side can cancel and what the penalties/restitution are for canceling.

I also suggest developing preliminary sketches/ideas to see if the artist is correctly interpreting what the buyer wants and several checkpoints along the way.

Thanks for your great tips. I'm considering taking the big step & participating in the Kansas City 4th Annual Art Fest. I chose KC because I have friends in the area & I might be able to stay w/them to cut down on expense. I've never done a large fest. I have done a small fest here in Monroe, LA. We were rained out w/wind & water everywhere! But, I think I'd like to give it another try.

It does make me feel wonderful! I teach a painting class regularly at my studio, teaching oil painting, and every time one of my student's completes a work, be it a landscape, or a still life or anything and goes home proudly to show it off, it makes me feel worthwhile , for having helped her to do so.
I also run a class blog which showcases all of their works and that gives them a chance to show their work to all their friends and family. Most of my student's come from non art backgrounds but have found such joy in painting newer subjects each time. It is a pleasure to watch them talk about painting a different subject and collect references for them.
The few hours I spend with them each week gives me a lot of inspiration for my own work :)

Your suggestion for setting up an art studio to surprise their mother almost had me in tears; it was so inspired! There isn't a better way to show a loved one how much you appreciate who they are, than to encourage their passions and hobbies. Bravo!
