I found this years ago in New Mexico...I would be in a gift shop and watched the Indian women come in with what they had made and aggressively sell to the shop owner....and I saw them set up on sidewalks selling their goods, unashamed of their prices...it was all about the fact that they were just trying to survive....they inspired me then and still do today. I am barely making a living at this and I am at the same point that they are and somehow am surviving....largely in part from their inspiration although they will never know that.
You are so very right in the correlation between need and motivation.....

Theresa,
Great blog!! You gave great advice in this article. As a detailed landscape realism artist that puts a lot of hours into one painting, I have been in this situation several time. I know how these artist were feeling.
Again let me say, great advice!!!That kind of decision can only be made by the artist themselves. I have been tempted to change my style many times but have always come to the conclusion to remain true to myself. It's just who I am!

Thanks, Good point :-) Vanity Galleries used to be far more prevalent in "book" form.(ie: Vanity press) You paid to have yourself in the "up and coming artists" book and in turn also purchased the book for friends and family! Online Galleries are similar...you pay to be there.

Thank you for the clarity, but you may also want to also use the term "vanity gallery."

Vanity galleries make their money from the artist wishing to be represented by them. It seems that these are prolific and popular. I rarely see any sales from them, but artists are lining up to be juried into these vanity galleries.

I hesitate to give money up front to a gallery to sell my work. Most of the time, the promotional materials, etc. are of poor quality, the art is horrifying, and the prices are astronomical. Why would I want my art hanging next to something that brings my quality down. Another sign of a vanity gallery: too many artists displaying their work in a too-large space!

Thanks for answering the question. I continue on my path.

Smiles,

A couple of points from this story:
She had nothing invested in the restaurant. Nothing to lose.

I did not see the entire episode, just a scene here and there, but the second lesson I take from this would be: being a restaurant owner and running a restaurant are two different animals. Walking amongst the tables, greeting customers, chatting with friends, picking up tabs might be what a "restaurant owner" does in the movies, on tv or in the mind of the casual observer, however anyone who has worked in a restaurant knows this is far from the truth. It is hard, never ending work.

As artists we have to come to grips with the fact that making a living as an artist has nothing in common with "living the artist's life" as portrayed in books, movies etc. It is hard never ending work, only since you are doing what you love and using you talent and skills, it is not work at all.

This is great stuff. When I was younger I distinctly remember the time when all my artist friends started to stare the CAREER question in the face. They needed advice like this, that's for sure.

It also reminds me of a story Dianna sent us a while back. She was told early on that a career in the arts was impossible, so went a different more financially secure route. Then a little later decided to "chuck it" and pursue her true passion -- art!
