NEWS FROM OUR STUDIO | |||
August 2009 |
|
We hope August finds everyone enjoying their summer
and all the good things that come with it! In NC, we have had unusual
low humidity mornings through July which have made sitting on the front
porch early in the morning, an enjoyable experience! On such mornings I
can usually work on the computer, coffee in hand, with all 5 dogs
sprawled somewhere at my feet. There are a lot of plants on the front
porch so I might see a nose poking out from behind one or a tail here
and there. But for the most part the dogs will lay quietly until around
7:30 or so. Then their internal breakfast alarm really kicks in.
Our Rottweiler, DaVinci, is actually a lap dog trapped in a big dog body. Pavlov's salivating dog experiments had nothing on this dog. He is obsessed with food. If it was possible to levitate food from your plate and pop it into his mouth, it would have happened by now. The intensity of his dedicated staring is admirable. When the restless signs start, I have to stop what I am doing (as in creating this newsletter) and feed everyone. But oh well, where would we be without our dogs? Those who follow us on Facebook also know that we welcomed tiny twin doelings into the world on August 5. One of the two pygmy does we had purchased in May became huge in July and after the former owner confirmed that an Alpine “could” have bred her, we knew. So now, just a few days later, Taffy and Hershy are leaping and spinning and cavorting all over the pasture. There is nothing cuter! And another subject for Steve to paint. |

"John's
River Gorge"

What’s
New in the Art
Studio
We
just returned from two weeks at the
Blowing Rock shows. Beautiful location, beautiful walk just up the road
to the “Wall” which overlooks the John's River Gorge and
Grandfather Mountain. Steve sat at and painted the
view the last two nights of the show. This lovely plein air, 12
x 36
oil is the view from this wall. Stunning views which change
by the
minute.
We convinced the show photographer, Catherine Cammett (with a little more persuation from board member, Doug Beach) to take the time and go see it. Her next day response was “Oh my God! All these years I have been coming to Blowing Rock and I never knew that was there!”. Isn't it fun to share a gorgeous spot with friends? We needed the spot mainly because this year the lovely cool temperate days were alternated with some seriously rainy days. The rain was intense enough for a few days to add to the drama of parked cars slowly beginning to slide down the hill! When the fog came, it brought with it that muffled, vision diminished world that only a mountain fog can create! Steve's views from our tent were limited to a few yards but not to worry, he painted that as well! I created this years artwork for the BRCHS Posters and T-shirts and it was fun having people come to me to sign their posters. Sort of celebrity like :-). |

Laugh of
the Month This is a real video from a French documentary about Africa . You won't't understand a word, but the video's a hoot. There are trees that grow in Africa which, once a year, produce very juicy fruits that contain a large percentage of alcohol. Because there is a shortage of water, as soon as the fruits are ripe, animals come there to help protect themselves from the heat. What happens next, you can watch for yourselves. Pretty funny! |
